Eastern Wind Integration and Transmission Study Mike Jacobs, National Renewable Energy Laboratory
Mike Jacobs of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory presented the results of the EWITS study to the attendees at the annual meeting. The highlights included the different scenarios and assumptions made that created the potential low-cost transmission buildouts that supported 20% wind energy by 2030 in the East region. Key takeaways included the need for large geographic balancing areas, and that no matter what energy resource was chosen in the future, transmission upgrades were going to be needed. Wind energy can serve as the driving mechanism to update and improve the transmission grid, therefore reducing system costs and increasing reliability.
