Southern Appalachian Regional Wind Energy Institute Webinars

The Southern Appalachian Regional Wind Energy Institute conducts quarterly webinars that are made available to regional wind advocates. Webinar topics are chosen by regional WWGs, and the RWEI searches for experts to present on the materials. The webinars are set up as a short presentation that is followed by a regional discussion with the expert to strategize on best practices for addressing the topic in each region. Each webinar is made available below, starting with the most recent.

Wind Energy Transmission - August 18, 2011
The Appalachian Region has excellent mountaintop wind energy resources; however, this resource has yet to be developed. Another way to utilize large quantities of wind energy in the Appalachian Region would be to build transmission lines between Appalachia and the Plains where many wind farms already exist and many more are planned. Please join us as we learn about a proposal by Clean Line Energy, a private developer, to connect up to 7,000 megawatts of wind energy from the Plains to the Southeast via high-voltage direct current transmission lines.

Presenter: Jimmy Glotfelty, Executive Vice President, Clean Line Energy
Jimmy Glotfelty is one of the founders and Executive Vice President of Clean Line Energy. Jimmy participates in all aspects of development of Clean Line’s project portfolio and oversees regulatory and public affairs issues nationally and at the state level. In addition, within this role, he leads government relations for Clean Line and manages a team responsible for corporate communications, community outreach and regulatory affairs.

Webinar: Reviving American Manufacturing with Wind Power – June 10th, 2PM EDT
The wind industry is now a major employer of American manufacturing. Wind system installations increased by an average of 32% annually over the last five years and now total over 40,000 MW in installed capacity. This growth has led to the creation of over 400 wind component manufacturing facilities that employ over 20,000 people across 42 states. This webinar is co-hosted by the Southern Appalachian Regional Wind Energy Institute and the Mid-Atlantic Wind Energy Institute.

Speakers:
Ed Rendell, Former Governor of Pennsylvania (2003-2011)
David Takash, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Gamesa Wind
Jessica Isaacs, Policy Analyst, American Wind Energy Association

Wind Generating Jobs Webinar
April 1, 2011

Wind energy generates thousands of high-quality, clean energy jobs. An estimated 85,000 people are currently employed by the wind industry in the U.S. The Jobs and Economic Development Impact (JEDI) model was created by the National Renewable Energy Lab to estimate the local job and economic impact resulting from the development of power plants, and can be used to estimate the benefits of wind farms. This webinar shows how to estimate job creation using the JEDI model and compares this to the real on-the-ground results of wind farm development from a local perspective.
